Before you plan for 2028 investment banking internships, check which year you mean. A summer 2028 internship is the one between junior and senior year for the class of 2029, which is this year's sophomores. If you are a sophomore, this post is your calendar: what the banks say about their own dates, what is already posted for summer 2028, and what to have ready before the first bank on your list opens.

Who are 2028 investment banking internships for?

Students search for both "summer 2028" and "class of 2028" internships, and they are not the same thing:

  • Summer 2028 internships are for the class of 2029, today's sophomores. This is the summer analyst internship, the main route into a full-time analyst class, and it is what this post is about.
  • Class of 2028 internships are for today's juniors. Their summer analyst internship is summer 2027, its banking cycle is well under way, and when 2027 summer analyst applications open is the post for them.

Between the two sits the summer after sophomore year, summer 2027 for your class. Some firms hire sophomores for it, and the sophomores page lists those internships too. Treat one as a head start, not a requirement: the summer analyst internship a year later is the one that often leads to a full-time offer.

The rule of thumb: the summer analyst internship falls in the summer of the year before you graduate. Count back from the year on your diploma, not from the year you started.

What is already posted for summer 2028?

Some banks have already posted for your class. The tracker holds 134 undergraduate summer 2028 internships at 45 firms, and 44 of them are on investment banking, at 16 firms. Of the banking ones, 37 are taking applications now and none is marked Expected to open yet.

On banking, the bank with the most is Evercore, with 16. A bank that posts each group and office as an opening of its own can have a long list, so count banks as well as postings. Some early postings come attached to an event, too: Scotiabank's summer 2028 banking openings pair a Houston insights day with the internship in one posting.

Leerink Partners is one of them: it says applications for its 2028 summer analyst internship are open now, for current sophomores, with interviews in January 2027 (Leerink Partners careers page, read September 28, 2026). The dates below are the banks' own.

The sophomores page lists the openings that take the class of 2029, these among them, and the investment banking openings page lists the whole path by firm.

When will 2028 investment banking internships open?

Each bank announces its own dates, and the banks that publish them do not agree:

  • Moelis says its US summer analyst applications usually open in December of sophomore year (Moelis careers page, read October 5, 2026). For the class of 2029, that is this December.
  • Harris Williams says its US summer analyst applications typically open during the late fall semester of sophomore year (Harris Williams summer analyst page, read September 28, 2026): this fall.
  • Macquarie says its Americas summer internship applications open in January for students ready to commit to an offer early, and reopen in August (Macquarie graduates and interns page, read October 17, 2026).
  • PJT Partners says its US summer analyst applications usually open in the spring a year ahead (PJT Partners students page, read October 5, 2026). For a summer 2028 internship, that is the spring of 2027.
  • Yale's career office says bulge-bracket banks can open applications in January and some boutiques take them from September or October (Yale Office of Career Strategy, industry hiring timelines, read October 5, 2026).

So nobody can give you one date for 2028, and a bank can move its dates from one year to the next. What you can do is find each bank's own date, on its own careers page, for the office and group you want, and be ready before the earliest one on your list. Read against those pages, your year has three parts:

  1. This fall: insight events, coffee chats, your resume, your technical basics, and any summer 2028 posting already up at a bank on your list.
  2. By December: be ready to apply. If a bank on your list opens in the December of sophomore year, as Moelis says it does, that is your first deadline season.
  3. Through the spring and after: apply in the first days each bank's posting is up, as PJT Partners' spring date and the boutiques' own calendars come round, and keep your interview preparation warm between rounds instead of starting over each time. If banking has not worked out by the summer, the 2027 recruiting timeline by path shows what the firms on the other paths say about their dates.

What should a sophomore do before then?

The steps before the summer analyst application are the ones that make it work.

Apply to insight events this fall and winter. The sophomores page lists 61 insight events that take the class of 2029, 23 of them taking applications now and 13 expected to open. At some banks they lead straight into the internship process. Moelis says the sophomores on its leadership development track get mentorship, deal case discussions and a chance to interview for its US summer analyst internship (the Moelis page above). Citi says its Early Identification, for US sophomores, is a three-week virtual mentorship with applications in November for a December start and in February for a March start, and that it helps participants prepare for summer analyst interviews (Citi pre-internships page, read October 5, 2026). Each firm page lists its openings by name, for example Citi and Moelis.

Finish your resume by the end of November. One page, every line a result, read by someone who works in finance.

Learn the technical basics by December. The three statements and how they link, the main valuation methods, and a simple merger or buyout. You do not need an analyst's depth, but you need to answer the first-round questions without notes.

Build a list of banks, not one bank. Bulge brackets, elite boutiques and middle-market banks do not announce the same dates, as the pages above show, so a list across all three spreads your chances across the year.

Practice the step you will meet first. Before any interview, some banks ask for an online assessment: Moelis requires one of its US and UK applicants, and PJT Partners makes one part of every application (the pages above). Firm Intel sorts each bank's interview questions by round and group, so you can see how its rounds are organized before you sit them.

The sophomore guide for 2027 covers the rest of your year, from insight days to coffee chats.

What to do this week.

  • Open the sophomores page and apply to one insight event at a bank on your list.
  • For each bank on your list, find the date it announces on its own careers page and put it in your calendar, with a reminder a month before it to finish your resume.
  • Look at the summer 2028 banking openings already on the investment banking openings page, and note which banks on your list have posted.
  • Write down your graduation year and count back one year: that summer is your summer analyst internship.

The investment banking openings page lists every tracked banking opening by firm, with the openings for your class one click away on the sophomores page.
