01 · Supply

Where the programs are

Investment Banking posts 259 of the 1102 tracked programs, 24% of the entire cycle and more than three times the next path, Asset Management (161). At the other end, Venture Capital (27) and Private Credit (21) post almost nothing through structured portals, which is why candidates on those paths win seats through networking rather than applications.

02 · Timing

When applications open

The first 2027-cycle application opened on August 11, 2025, roughly two years before the internships themselves begin. Aug '26 was the single busiest month with 182 openings, 31% of all dated openings, and 30% of them landed in the four months from December through March. Dates below cover the 592 programs that have announced openings so far.

Openings by month

Announced application opening dates, August 2025 through August 2026.

Season compression, measured honestly: year-over-year comparison is only possible for the 3 programs where both this season's and last season's opening dates are tracked. In that small subset, every program opened earlier than the prior cycle, by about 8 days on a same-calendar basis. A further 21 programs have not opened yet but carry a prior-season date, which is how the tracker predicts their windows.

03 · Requirements

Who still wants a cover letter

Of the 325 programs with a recorded cover letter flag, 203 (62%) skip the letter entirely and only 39 (12%) hard-require one, with 83 more listing it as optional. The requirement concentrates in Middle Market and Buy-Side seats, which together account for 23 of the 39 required letters. Trading and Quant firms almost never demand one: 1 of the flagged programs in that category requires a letter, though 13 list it as optional.

Cover letter flags by firm category

Categories with at least 10 tracked programs; a program can sit in several categories.

04 · Geography

Where the seats are

New York carries 419 program listings, more than Chicago (181) and Boston (134) combined. The rest of the top ten shows how far the map has spread beyond the coasts, with Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, and Charlotte all posting sizable counts. We track 295 distinct cities in total, so plenty of seats exist outside the ten shown here; a program listing several cities counts once per city.

Methodology

Computed from every one of the 1102 rows on the tracker, US Finance 2027 cycle, checked through August 2026. Cover letter and written-answer shares use only programs with a recorded flag; unreported values are shown as unreported, never assumed. Visa sponsorship is recorded at the firm level and many firms leave it blank. The opening-month histogram covers the 592 programs with an announced date. Path classification follows the same rules the Internvest tracker uses in production.
