Quant trading internships are a different market from banking's. The firms are smaller, many of them trade their own money, the interviews test probability and quick arithmetic instead of accounting, and the firms keep calendars of their own. This post counts who hires and where the roles are, sets out what the firms say about their dates and what is open now, looks at what the interviews test, then gives you a way to prepare.

What is a quant trading internship?

A quantitative trader prices things and manages the risk that comes with trading them. At a market maker, that means quoting a price to buy and a price to sell, all day, across many products, and earning the gap between them while keeping the firm's risk in check. Optiver describes its business that way: it quotes buy and sell prices across markets with its own capital (Optiver Europe recruitment FAQ, read October 5, 2026). Akuna Capital describes itself as a proprietary trading firm that specializes in options market making (Akuna Capital careers, read October 5, 2026).

The work is also more technical than the title suggests. IMC says most of its trading is automated, so its traders spend much of their time using Python to analyze data and improve the strategies (IMC, how we hire, read October 5, 2026). A summer internship usually lasts about ten weeks: IMC says its US interns typically start in the second week of June and finish in the third week of August, and DRW describes a 10-week internship built around a hands-on project for the firm (DRW internships, read October 5, 2026).

Who hires quant trading interns?

Internvest tags 639 openings as trading and quant roles, at 59 firms: 573 on the sales and trading path and 66 on the hedge fund path. That is 639 of the 1,669 openings on the two paths, counted the way the path pages count them, with a closing date or an application link.

Firms with the most trading and quant openings

The ten firms with the most of the 639 openings Internvest tags as trading and quant roles on the sales and trading and hedge fund paths, out of 59 firms, every type and cycle, as of November 2, 2026.

  1. Susquehanna International Group110 openings
  2. Jane Street72 openings
  3. Squarepoint Capital44 openings
  4. Jump Trading41 openings
  5. Optiver39 openings
  6. IMC Trading30 openings
  7. DV Trading28 openings
  8. DRW21 openings
  9. Tower Research Capital19 openings
  10. Virtu Financial19 openings

The firms with the most tagged openings are Susquehanna International Group, Jane Street, Squarepoint Capital, Jump Trading and Optiver. Behind them, 24 of the 59 firms have one or two, so fewer than half of the firms post a handful of roles: your list needs to be long. Banks' quantitative and electronic trading desks carry the tag too, and so do a few energy companies' commodity trading teams, so the list is wider than the proprietary trading firms. Each firm's page lists its tracked openings by name, for example Jane Street, Susquehanna International Group, Optiver and DRW.

By type, the tagged openings are 318 summer internships, 232 full-time roles, 35 insight events and 33 off-cycle internships. By recruiting cycle, they are 3 for 2026, 377 for 2027 and 2 for 2028, plus 257 with no cycle stated, so read a posting's dates and eligibility, not only its title.

Where are the roles?

By region, the openings break down as 328 in the US, 112 in the UK, 99 in Asia, 85 in Europe, 14 in Canada and 1 in the Middle East. By stated location, 170 are in New York, 128 in Chicago, 127 in London and 52 in Amsterdam; none is in Sydney. A posting can name more than one city, so the city counts overlap.

Two places need a note. Amsterdam is where both Optiver and IMC run their European summer internships: Optiver says its Amsterdam internship runs for 10 weeks in July and August, with trading, research and technology tracks, and IMC says its European internship there runs for 10 weeks, typically from the end of June to the end of August (the Optiver and IMC pages above). For Australia, IMC says its Asia Pacific summer internships run over the Australian summer (the IMC page above). If you are applying from there, check the firms' own pages directly as well as the hedge fund openings page and the sales and trading openings page.

When do quant trading internships open?

On each firm's own date. What the firms say on their own pages:

  • Optiver says it expects to open applications for its 2027 campus roles, internships and graduate positions included, around the end of August 2026 (Optiver Europe recruitment FAQ, read October 12, 2026).
  • Millennium says its internship applications open on August 3 and that it fills roles on a rolling basis (Millennium students page, read October 5, 2026).
  • DRW says it reviews applications on a rolling basis and encourages you to apply as soon as its roles are posted (the DRW page above).
  • Yale's career office, in its notes for students headed to programming and data science roles, lists finance, quant and trading firms as recruiting from August to October, with some processes starting even earlier (Yale Office of Career Strategy, industry hiring timelines, read October 12, 2026).

On those words, the late summer and early fall of the year before the internship are when to be ready, but dates move from year to year, so check each firm on your list on its own careers page. A rolling review means the first applications read are the ones with every seat still open.

Here is what is open today, and when it closes.

Among the tagged openings, 162 summer 2027 internships, in every region, are taking applications now. Of those, 5 state a deadline in November 2026 and 0 in December 2026, 155 state none or have none on file, and 11 say the firm reviews on a rolling basis. Of the rest on file, none is marked Expected to open yet. The recruiting timeline by path puts sales and trading and hedge funds beside the other paths.

What do the interviews test?

Internvest's interview intel covers 24 trading firms. Across the firms' public pages, the first round holds 100+ questions and the Superday 95, and three map to a recorded video round. By type, 132 are technical, 17 are markets questions, five carry the brain teaser label, and 53 are behavioral or fit. By drill, they map 68 to Brain Teasers, 53 to Behavioral, 40 to Capital Markets and 18 to Markets and Market Making: the puzzles sit mostly inside the technical label, not beside it.

The firms say the same in their own words. Jane Street says its trading process starts with phone interviews and ends with an in-person final round that can cover problem solving, probability and statistics, coding, data analysis and general interests, without complicated math or any knowledge of finance (Jane Street trading interviews, read October 5, 2026). DRW describes a timed take-home challenge, on probability and logic for quantitative roles, then a video interview with a developer, trader or researcher, then a two-day final round (the DRW page above). Optiver's European recruiting FAQ (above) says its online assessments can be taken only once every eight months, so a rushed attempt costs you most of a year.

The intel pages show each firm's rounds, for example Jane Street, Optiver, Susquehanna International Group, IMC Trading, Hudson River Trading and DRW.

How do you prepare?

Four skills, practiced out loud, most days, for weeks rather than hours.

  • Probability: counting outcomes, conditional probability and independence, until you can set up a problem before you solve it.
  • Mental math: fast, accurate arithmetic with fractions, percentages and products, because timed tests and live questions reward speed as well as accuracy.
  • Expected value: the average result of a bet over many tries, and the price at which you would take either side.
  • Market making: quoting a price to buy and a price to sell around your estimate, and moving both when someone trades with you.

A worked example of our own, not tied to any firm. A wheel has four equal sections that pay $0, $2, $4 and $10. One spin is worth (0 + 2 + 4 + 10) / 4 = $4 on average. If someone sells you a spin for $3.50, your edge is $4.00 minus $3.50, or $0.50 a spin: about $50 over 100 spins, even though a quarter of your spins pay nothing. If you were making a market on one spin, you might quote $3.50 to buy and $4.50 to sell, fifty cents either side of fair value. And if buyers keep taking your $4.50, ask what they know before you sell to them again. That last step, updating on who trades with you, is what separates a market maker from a calculator.

What to do this week.

  • If you are a junior in the class of 2028, the juniors page lists 235 sales and trading and 129 hedge fund openings not yet closed. Firms that open in August, as Optiver says it does, have been taking applications for weeks, so apply this week to the ones still open.
  • If you are a sophomore in the class of 2029, the sophomores page lists 77 sales and trading and 16 hedge fund openings for you. Look for the insight events among them, and put each trading firm's own date in your calendar now: if Optiver keeps the timing it describes, its next European campus applications open in the late summer before your junior year.
  • Do fifteen minutes of mental math every day, and one probability set a week, out loud.
  • Read Jane Street's trading interviews page and DRW's internships page in full.
  • Write down three expected value problems of your own, solve them, then quote a market on each.
  • See how an opening's status reads on Is it open?

The sales and trading openings page and the hedge fund openings page list every tracked opening on the two paths by firm, and Firm Intel lays out each firm's interview questions by round.
