The consulting recruiting timeline for 2027, and what to do now
When consulting firms say they open applications, how that differs from banking, which firms post the most, and what the classes of 2028 and 2029 should do now.

Consulting recruiting does not keep banking's dates, and students who borrow banking's calendar can start worrying at the wrong time and stop looking too soon. This post sets out what the firms and Yale's career office say about consulting's dates, puts them beside banking's, shows what is open now, names the firms with the most openings, looks at the case interview rounds, and ends with what the class of 2028 and the class of 2029 should do this year.
When do consulting firms open applications?
Each firm sets its own dates, and they fall on two calendars. Yale's career office describes them (Yale Office of Career Strategy, industry hiring timelines, read October 12, 2026):
- The large firms. McKinsey, BCG, Bain and the other large consulting firms open applications for internships and full-time roles from early spring to August, about a year before the internship or start date. Deadlines vary by firm, and in the summer 2027 cycle they typically fell around late March.
- The boutiques. Smaller consulting firms open later, in the fall, from September to December.
- Rolling reviews. Some firms read applications as they arrive and pick candidates for interviews before any deadline, so Yale's advice is to apply as soon as you are ready.
For the class of 2028, that put the large firms' summer 2027 applications in the spring of sophomore year, and puts the boutiques' in the fall of junior year: now. A firm can move its dates from one year to the next, so check each one on its own careers page.
Here is what is open on the path today, and when it closes.
Consulting summer 2027 internships open now, by the deadline they state
The 38 undergraduate US summer 2027 internships on the management consulting path taking applications on November 6, 2026, by the month of the deadline each states.
- Closing in November 20264 openings
- Closing in December 20261 openings
- Closing in January 20270 openings
- Closing February 2027 or later0 openings
- No deadline stated16 openings
- No deadline on file17 openings
On the tracker today, 38 undergraduate US summer 2027 internships on the management consulting path are taking applications. Of those, 4 state a deadline in November 2026 and 1 in December 2026, 33 state none or have none on file, and 5 say the firm reviews on a rolling basis. Of the rest on file, none is marked Expected to open yet. Consulting firms often call their undergraduate interns associates, so postings named for a summer associate count here; postings for MBA students do not.
How does that compare with banking?
Banking's dates come earlier. Yale's career office says investment banks begin recruiting for their summer internships about a year and a half before that summer, and that bulge-bracket banks open applications as early as January (the Yale page above). Moelis writes that applications for its US summer analyst internship typically open in the December of sophomore year (Moelis careers page, read October 5, 2026). On those words, a student recruiting for both meets banking's large firms in the winter of sophomore year and consulting's in the spring.
On the tracker today, 49 undergraduate US summer 2027 banking internships are taking applications, beside consulting's 38.
The two paths recruit many of the same students, but not on the same dates. If you are recruiting for both, plan each from the firms' own dates, and keep your case practice going through the winter and spring instead of starting it the week a posting goes up. The recruiting timeline by path puts both beside the other eight paths.
Which consulting firms have the most openings?
Internvest tracks 574 management consulting openings at 68 firms, counting every opening with a closing date or an application link. The firms with the most are Accenture, Roland Berger, BCG, Marsh and FTI Consulting.
Firms with the most management consulting openings
The ten firms with the most of the 574 management consulting openings Internvest tracks, out of 68 firms, every type, region and cycle, as of November 6, 2026.
- Accenture48 openings
- Roland Berger46 openings
- BCG38 openings
- Marsh33 openings
- FTI Consulting31 openings
- Kearney24 openings
- Oliver Wyman23 openings
- Bain & Company20 openings
- Guidehouse19 openings
- Berkeley Research Group17 openings
The three firms students name first post very differently: BCG 38, Bain & Company 20 and McKinsey & Company 4. A firm that posts one opening for many offices counts once, and a firm that posts each office or practice separately counts many times, so a low count does not mean a small intern class. Each firm's page lists its tracked openings by name: McKinsey & Company, BCG and Bain & Company.
By type, the path's openings are 262 summer internships, 184 full-time roles, 23 insight events and 70 off-cycle internships. By region, they are 219 in the US, 181 in Europe, 81 in the UK, 57 in Asia, 19 in the Middle East and 17 in Canada, and most of the off-cycle internships are outside the US.
What can sophomores and first-years apply to?
Most consulting summer internships are for juniors, but the class pages show what earlier years can do. For the class of 2029, the sophomores page lists 17 consulting openings not yet closed: 7 summer internships, 9 insight events and 1 off-cycle internship. The firms with insight events among them are Accenture, Altman Solon, Bain & Company, Cornerstone Research, FTI Consulting and Management Leadership for Tomorrow. For the class of 2030, the first-years page lists 3: three insight events.
An insight event will not get you an offer on its own, but it gives you a name at the firm, a reason to apply that is your own, and a first look at how the firm talks about its work.
What do the case interview rounds look like?
Internvest's interview intel maps 112 first-round and 113 Superday questions on the consulting path, at 41 firms, and one to a recorded video round. By type, they are 154 technical, 34 behavioral, 33 fit and 5 brain teaser. By drill, they map 37 to Case Math and Exhibits, 37 to Consulting Fit, 30 to Behavioral and 30 to Case Frameworks, and 94 map to the case drills (Case Math and Exhibits, Case Frameworks, Market Sizing, Profitability and M&A and Due Diligence Cases). The intel pages of McKinsey & Company, BCG and Bain & Company show eight first-round and six Superday questions each.
The firms describe the rounds on their own pages:
- Bain says a consulting application usually means a digital assessment followed by case interviews, that its case interviews reward structured thinking, precision and creativity rather than one right answer, and that it gives every candidate for a role the same questions, to reduce bias (Bain, interviewing, read October 5, 2026).
- Oliver Wyman says its process mixes conversational and case interviews. Its advice for the case is to treat the interviewer as your client: ask clarifying questions, break the problem into parts, state your assumptions, take care with simple arithmetic, and end with a recommendation (Oliver Wyman interview preparation, read October 5, 2026).
- Deloitte says to expect two to three rounds by phone, video or in person, with behavioral, technical and case interviews depending on the role (Deloitte recruiting tips, read October 5, 2026).
How do you solve a market-sizing question?
Structure first, then numbers, then a check. Here is one of our own, not tied to any firm: how big is the yearly market for haircuts in a city of 600,000 people?
- Structure: the market is paying customers, times haircuts a year, times the average price.
- Customers: assume half the residents pay for haircuts, so 300,000 people.
- Volume: about six haircuts a year each, so 1,800,000 haircuts.
- Price: about $30 on average, so 1,800,000 times $30 is $54 million a year.
- Check from the supply side: a stylist who does 10 haircuts a day for 250 days does 2,500 a year, so the city needs about 1,800,000 divided by 2,500, or 720 stylists. If that sounds wrong for a city that size, revisit an assumption out loud.
Then say which assumption moves the answer most. Here it is the share who pay: at 40 percent instead of half, the market falls to $43.2 million. Saying that unprompted shows you know where your answer is weakest.
What should the class of 2028 do this year?
If you are a junior in the class of 2028, the large firms' summer 2027 deadlines fell in the spring, on Yale's account, but the boutiques recruit this fall and some firms review on a rolling basis. The juniors page lists 93 consulting openings not yet closed for you: 90 summer internships, 1 full-time role, 1 insight event and 1 off-cycle internship. Apply to the ones you want now, practice cases two or three times a week with a partner, and line up one conversation at each firm you apply to; the coffee chat playbook covers what to ask. Keep checking the consulting openings page through the winter, for the boutiques that post later and the roles that stay open.
What should the class of 2029 do this year?
If you are a sophomore in the class of 2029, your consulting internship is summer 2028. If the large firms keep the calendar Yale describes, their applications for it open from early spring 2027, in the spring of your sophomore year, about a year ahead (the Yale page above). That gives you this fall and winter to build what the firms screen for: a resume with results in numbers, a reason for consulting you can say in two sentences, and case practice that starts this winter, not the week before the deadline. Apply to the insight events on the sophomores page, and start your conversations with consultants now.
What to do this week.
- Open the consulting openings page and mark the firms on your list.
- Juniors: apply to the openings you want that are still open, and book two case practice sessions.
- Sophomores: pick two insight events from the sophomores page and apply.
- Do one market-sizing question out loud, timed, with a friend as the interviewer, then redo it with one assumption changed.
- Read the case advice on Bain's and Oliver Wyman's own pages, then open the interview intel pages of the firms on your list.
The management consulting openings page lists every tracked opening on the path by firm, and Firm Intel lays out each firm's interview questions by round.
